Link Popularity
Link popularity is the number of links that point to a webpage. It is a important factor used by almost all of the major search engines in ranking websites.
Many site owners mistakenly, try to get as many links as possible to their site. This, however, won't necessarily help. The quality of the link is a key factor that most search engines look at. How improtant the other site is and how closely does the other sites content fit with yours. If, as an example you have a web business selling candle making supplies, highly ranked craft endeavors would help you more than a site selling presciption medication.
Search engines look at the content of a webpage to determine if it is a good match for a search as well as text contained within links that point to your site.
There are a number of methods that you can you can use to gain link exchanges with other sites.
1. Use a search engine to do a search for key words and websites related to yours, then join their link page if they have an add your site or email the site requesting a "reciprocal link" - they list your site and you list theirs.
2. Use a reciprocal Link or Swap program that you sign up for and members pick and choose sites from other member sites. You will make some requests, and others will see your listing and contact you as well.
